Album “In Her Own Lane”: 8. Old Fashioned

“Being of the female species, I occasionally have the privilege of getting the unsolicited single-word message “Hey” in my Facebook messenger from random males. Just “Hey”, nothing else. I do recognize that it’s an expression of interest. Still, it’s comically a far cry from a grand gesture that a gentleman could be making to initiate his pursuit of a possible courtship. I decided to have some fun with it and created this song.

Join me on a journey back to a magical timeless time, hanging out with my favorite great ones like Frank Sinatra, Maria Callas or Joseph Campbell. I hope you enjoy it.

PS. Air-fried brocoli is very healthy, so I was told.”

– Petra Deeter

[Verse 1]

Not equipped to wade through the modern-day dating scene,

In her social media inbox, she occasionally gets a glimpse,

The unsolicited one-word “Hey” – so eloquent, so all-encompassing,

She’s not quite prepared for such elaborate enchantment.

[Chorus]

How many frogs must she kiss just to find her prince?

Has romance died in this imperfect world’s dark scene?

Weโ€™re all broken, pretending to be functioning human

Hiding our deepest defenses, longing for real connections.

[Verse 2]

Looking around, she sometimes wonders if anyone is happy,

Her single friends are struggling with breakup miseries,

Married friends unhappily staying for image, for stability,

While keeping secret side pieces, playing sugar daddies.

[Verse 3]

In the corner of her room, her vinyl record player turns,

Intoxicatingly, it spins a sweet saxophone tune,

Suddenly, she found herself teleported to a place unknown,

Sparkling chandeliers light up a lavish, opulent ballroom.

[Chorus]

How many frogs must she kiss just to find her prince?

Has romance died in this imperfect world’s dark scene?

Weโ€™re all broken, pretending to be functioning human

Hiding our deepest defenses, longing for real connections.

[Verse 4]

Leaning against a grand piano, Frank Sinatra is listening,

To the harrowing intensity of Habanera as Maria Callas sings,

Oscar Wilde smokes a cigar, whispering to Marilyn Monroe,

Sharing the latest hot gossip about the stolen royal pearls.

[Bridge]

Across the room, Queen Cleopatra is guarded by her regal lion,

Next to Joseph Campbell, they are in a deep conversation,

About the decisive crisis on a hero’s journey and its implications,

It’s a magical time, chivalry’s alive, and men are real gentlemen.

[Chorus]

How many frogs must she kiss just to find her prince?

Has romance died in this imperfect world’s dark scene?

Weโ€™re all broken, pretending to be functioning human

Hiding our deepest defenses, longing for real connections.

[Outro]

Sadly, her archaic idea of love exists only in her imagination,

Sheโ€™s not equipped for modern-day heartbreak’s complication

Can’t use pistol duels to end relationships, to cut all strings,

She’ll have therapy and air-fried broccoli for her healing.
